Jaguars

Although the Fercos Brothers do not currently have jaguars as part of their family, it is important to learn about this fourth species of big cat because they are now endangered. Jaguars were originally found in North, Central, and South America. Thousands lived in the Amazon rainforest, but deforestation due to farming has forced them out into the open. They have always been hunted for their fur coats; now that they are exposed in open territory they are easier prey for illegal poaching. Farmers also poison them to protect their livestock.

Their coloring is similar to a leopard - tawny with spots – but their spots (or rosettes) are slightly different. A jaguar’s body is also stockier with a thicker, shorter tail. There are also black jaguars.

A jaguar can stalk a human for miles, but it is usually trying to get that person out of its territory. It rarely kills people; it just retreats once the person is out of its territory.
